Woodwind & Brass

The fascinating fact about wind instruments is that every instrument is so different. Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, and Saxophone have their own charming points. The Flute has many misty and watery pieces, and the Oboe has pieces that emphasize its projecting sounds. The Clarinet has both romantic pieces and jazzy pieces. Bassoon pieces maximize their humorous and bouncy sounds, while showing the sweet lines. Saxophone pieces are contemporary and challenging, but very fun to play with!

I have worked with Brasses frequently. Euphonium and Tuba can have a brassy sound, but also an extremely warm and soft sound. Modern Trombone pieces are not easy, but satisfying to play.

One of the points of playing with wind instruments is breathing. The pianist needs to wait, pull, and push for breathing. Also, getting the cueing and cutoff sign is different from strings – the pianist should expect the exhale going into the instrument and make a sound.
