Chamber Music

In chamber music, pianist is the only one performing with a score, not a part. A pianist is often like a conductor, who sets the tempo and manages the balance. Knowing this makes the one-step higher chamber musician, not just an accompanist.

Solving issues in chamber music is different from solving issues in solo accompaniment. A pianist cannot repeat or skip to be lined up with one of the instruments, because it will confuse the other instruments. Instead, letting the performers know where they should be is important. The beauty of chamber music is evoked when we save one another.

Usually, the more instruments that exist, the less flexibility there is. I have experienced it by doing Trio, Quartet, Sextet, and Octet. A pianist needs to know how to approach differently in the given circumstances.
