Piano sometimes perform as a member of large ensemble. Playing in a large ensemble with a conductor is very different from playing in a small ensemble. I have thought that the conductor's role in the large ensemble is similar to the pianist's role in the small ensemble. It is helpful to think about the connections between large and small ensembles.
